Social Circumstance

Having delved into the patients personal history you will have built an impression of  their life from birth to present. The social circumstance section looks at the current day to day life of the patient.

You will find alot of the information in the social circumstance section will already have been ascertained and will simply need writing up however double check that you have inquired about the list below.

  • Current accommodation

  • Current occupation

  • Relationships

  • Social network, hobbies, pastimes

  • Religious affiliations

  • Financial situation

  • Hobbies and leisure activities

  • Alcohol (units/week, CAGE (2 or more yes ? alcohol problem) dependence)

  • Smoking (establish in pack years, type)

  • Recreational drug use (types, quantities, costs, mode of administration, effects, social group)

 

Example. Shaun

'Shaun lives with his 3 children in a council flat on the 9th floor of a tower block in a rough part of town. His youngest son has ADHD and his daughter has learning difficulty they both attend a special school in a nearby city. His oldest son attended the local state secondary school before he was permanently excluded 1 month ago, he currently learns subjects via an online teaching programme.

Shaun has had multiple short and unsuccessful relationships since his wife died him but none of these were ever "serious or long term..." "just a bit of fun" but he did mention his three children as his perceived reason for non-committal from women in general.

He has two close friends who he sees most days (at his house, theirs, local pub or betting shop) "James and Andy... those two lads 'ave stuck through thick and thin" Shaun was brought up in a church of England family but currently only goes to church on special occasions "weddings and funerals... I don't know if I believe in all that Jesus saviour malarkey"

The family currently live on state benefits and disability living allowance and says his financial situation is "ok...  see to it my kids never go without" He has had three convictions for growing and dealing in cannabis he denies this to be a source of income.

Shaun has a 32 pack year history and currently smokes 30 a day, he drinks approximately 20 units a week, he denied any current drug use. In his spare time he enjoys watching TV, horse racing and betting.'
